Mahindra Thar Electric gets registered officially: patent filed for Thar.e

Mahindra has just gotten a patent registered for its Thar.e concept that was showcased in August.

Mahindra showcased its future electric concept cars under the ‘BE’ subbrand in the month of August, which included the Thar.e concept. The concept model of the well-known lifestyle SUV (Thar) received widespread acclaim for its stunning design and enhanced off-road capabilities. Mahindra Thar has always been a name to reckon with. Originally designed as a workhorse for Indian terrain, the Thar has now evolved into a lifestyle icon that perfectly marries rugged capabilities with modern comfort and style. With the new electric iteration in the works, the appeal that Thar carries is only going to increase.

Mahindra Thar.e's Design Philosophy

Internationally, the rugged appearance is increasingly becoming the standard for many upcoming, off-road-oriented SUVs of the next generation. The Thar electric appears to be following a similar trend. Its design is so distinctive that drawing parallels with the conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) car is a challenging task.

Thar.e showcases several enhancements, including squared LED headlamps featuring integrated DRLs, robust front and rear bumpers, a fresh ‘parallel to the ground’ hood design, and generously sized wheel arches. The concept car appears to be riding on radically designed alloy wheels, which we reckon will not be carried to the final production car. The flat roof and the rear segment maintain the iconic boxy profile. The concept car is seen with exposed hinges on the doors, which complement the SUV's rugged aesthetic, reinforcing its distinctive character.

In the interior, Thar.e will feature a spacious, large touchscreen display and a fully digital instrument cluster. The interior adopts a minimalist design, creating a more expansive ambiance. The elevated center console effectively separates different zones within the cabin. The electric boasts a redesigned steering wheel with integrated controls, while the substantial and durable grab handles serve both functional and symbolic purposes, alluding to the SUV's off-road prowess.

What about performance and range?

The registered patent of the Thar.e is the first official proclamation towards the realization of the concept car, so as of now, we don’t know the exact specifications of the car. But what is known is that the Thar.e will not be a laddar-on-frame SUV like the current Thar, but it will be based upon a modified version of Mahindra’s new INGLO-EV platform, known as P1. The INGLO (India Global) platform, which will also serve as the foundation for five other all-new electric SUVs from Mahindra, is a skateboard platform with a flat battery slung between the wheels.

The battery and motor setup of the Thar.e are not yet disclosed, but some reports suggest that it will use a set of electric motors sourced from VW while the batteries will come from BYD. The battery pack may have a capacity of 60 kWh, and the motor output will be 108 hp for the front axle and up to 280 hp for the rear.

Mahindra has said that an 80kWh battery pack would return a range of about 435 km to 450 km; we can assume that the anticipated 60kWh battery pack will return a range of around 350 km.

Dimensions

It is expected that the Thar.e will have a wheelbase between 2,775 mm and 2,975 mm and ground clearance between 250 mm and 300 mm. In terms of other dimensions, it will be somewhat similar to the ICE version of the Thar, which measures just less than four meters in length and has a width of 1,820 mm.

Lunch Timeline

Mahindra has already announced the timeline for the launch of its all-new battery EVs under the BE sub-brand, which will begin in late 2024, so Thar.e is not expected to be launched any time soon. It may be seen in the showrooms only past 2026 or even later.
