Volvo C40 Recharge EV debuts with 420km range

By Team ManAndMotor - 08-03-2021 10:41 PM

Following the introduction of the Volvo XC40 Recharge last year, Swedish carmaker Volvo Cars introduced the all-new C40 Recharge electric vehicle based on the CMA vehicle platform and debuts as the first Volvo model designed as pure electric only. The C40 Recharge is sleeker and lower in its design but comes with all the functionalities of an SUV. The new C40 Recharge is part of Volvo’s larger scheme to comprise 50 percent of its global sales volume to consist of fully electric cars, with the rest hybrids. By 2030, it plans for every car it sells to be pure electric.

The new front design of the Volvo C40 Recharge introduces a new face for electric Volvos and includes headlights with pixel-technology, while the rear features a design to go with the lower roofline. The high-seating position adds to its SUV credentials while a host of color and upholstery options add a unique touch to the overall appeal of the electric SUV. It is also the first Volvo model to be completely leather-free.

Like the XC40 Recharge, the C40 Recharge comes with one of the best infotainment systems on the market, jointly developed with Google and based on the Android operating system. It provides consumers with Google apps and services built-in, such as Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store, and is capable of updating the software over the air.

The electric heart of the Volvo C40 Recharge consists of two electric motors- one on the front and one on the rear axle, powered by a 78kWh battery that can be fast-charged to 80 percent in about 40 minutes. It offers an anticipated range of around 420km, which is expected to improve over time via over-the-air software updates. However, it's not yet been EPA-rated, so the range estimates are pending. The fully electric C40 Recharge will be available online only and will go into production later this year. It will be built alongside the XC40 Recharge at the Volvo Cars manufacturing plant in Ghent, Belgium.
