The electric avatar of Mahindra’s famous XUV700, which will be called XUV.e8, has been spied many times in the recent past while undergoing testing, and yet again, all-new spy images of the test-mule car are making news. As we already know, the XUV.e8 is slated to be launched in the later part of next year. Here are some intriguing details about the car based on the latest spy images.
Exterior Features
The exterior of the XUV.e8 showcases a design that seamlessly merges innovation with familiarity. The front fascia, partly unveiled in the latest spy pictures, reveals a striking LED light bar spanning the width of the vehicle, reminiscent of the newly updated Tata Twins and Hyundai Verna. Complementing this, the model sports vertically stacked inverted L-type LED DRLs and a split LED headlamp setup with a distinctive pod-like design.
At the rear, the XUV.e8 mirrors the XUV700's aesthetics, featuring arrow-shaped LED tail lamps, a rear wiper, a shark-fin antenna, and a high-mounted stop lamp. Notably, the rear bumper is carried over from the internal combustion engine (ICE) version, but we are of the mind that some of the rear design elements will be updated by the time the e8 gets launched.
Interior Highlights
Inside the XUV.e8, a three-screen setup catches the eye, comprising an all-digital instrument cluster, an infotainment screen, and an additional screen, probably for the co-driver. The layout is reminiscent of the XUV400. The spy shots showcase a spacious cabin with a modern aesthetic, featuring a two-spoke steering wheel, a conventional automatic gear selector, and a circular dial for drive modes.
Performance
The XUV.e8 is expected to measure 4,740mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,762mm. Its power will be derived from an 80kWh battery pack, although lower variants may do with a 60kWh battery pack. The car may feature all kinds of drive configurations, like AWD, RWD, or FWD, for optimal performance, with the peak output reaching well above 350 BHP.
The electric SUV is likely to be built on Mahindra's INGLO platform, emphasizing the company's commitment to innovative and sustainable vehicle architecture.
Competition and market positioning
Positioned above the XUV400, the XUV.e8 is set to enter a fiercely competitive midsize electric SUV market. With rivals like the upcoming Harrier EV, Tata Curvv EV, Maruti Suzuki eVX, and offerings from Toyota, Hyundai, and Kia, Mahindra aims to make a mark with its futuristic design and cutting-edge technology.
Future Plans
The XUV.e8 marks Mahindra's foray into a new era of zero-emission SUVs, forming the vanguard of the automaker's ambitious plans to launch at least five new SUVs in the next couple of years, targeting not only the domestic market but certain global markets as well.
The car it is based upon (the XUV700) is already a blockbuster in the Indian market and commands a long waiting range, so we expect that its electric sibling will also turn the table for Mahindra as, as of now, Tata Motors leads the charts in terms of sales of BEVs.
As the prototypes shed their camouflage, the industry gained insights into Mahindra's commitment to sustainable and electrified mobility.
