Next generation Skoda Superb unveiled globally: India bound

By Adarsh Dutt Upadhyay - 03-11-2023 05:27 PM

Skoda has finally unwrapped the fourth-generation Skoda Superb and its estate version for the global market. The exterior of the car undergoes evolutionary changes, while the interiors are thoroughly revised.

The latest iteration of Skoda’s D-segment sedan has been unveiled for the international market, along with its estate version. Both cars have been updated in accordance with Skoda's latest design language. The new Superb resembles its smaller sibling, the Slavia, in terms of overall looks. The refreshed looks make the car appear sharper and more sophisticated than the last version; however, there is no drastic design change in the exterior of the car. The car will be made available globally with a range of petrol and diesel engine options, along with a plug-in hybrid option. The car is expected to come to India, but no time line has been declared as of now. Moreover,  the diesel engine will not come to India, as the VW Group has already dumped its diesel engines in the Indian market.

Fourth Gen Skoda Superb: Design

As said, the new Superb has been given very subtle yet mature changes to its exterior appearance. The front of the car gets a new grille, sharp-looking new LED matrix beam headlight units with a crystal effect, and a new bumper. Skoda officials have claimed that the new Superb has 10 percent less coefficient of drag than the sedan, while the reduction is claimed to be 15 percent.

The side profile of the car is clean, with no cuts or creases but a strong shoulder line that runs almost the entire length. There are different alloy wheel designs depending on the model, with the top model getting 19-inch wheels. The rear LED tail lights are completely new, with intriguing C-shaped LED elements.

Dimensionally, the latest car is 40 mm longer but 15 mm narrower than the last model, while the height of the car has increased by 10 mm. However, the wheelbase of the new car is the same as the previous generation car at 2,841 mm. The boot of the sedan has grown by 20 liters and now stands at 645 liters, while for the estate version, it is larger by 30 liters, which translates to 690 liters of boot capacity.

Fourth Gen Skoda Superb: Interior

Skoda first unveiled the interior a few months ago. The layered design of different materials makes it appear more premium. The dash carries multiple vertical character lines. Behind the steering wheel is a 10-inch virtual cockpit and a 13-inch free-standing touchscreen display for the infotainment system. To save space in the center console, Skoda relocated the gear selector to the steering column. It also includes smart dials, which have a small digital display for multiple functions, making the dashboard look cleaner with fewer buttons. The center dial can be assigned different functions as per the user's preference. The steering is modern, with two spokes following the latest Skoda fashion. HUD is also available in the feature list.

Interior trim options include Loft, Lounge, and EcoSuite themes in black or cognac. A panoramic sunroof, Canton audio system, optional leather upholstery, wireless charger, front and rear armrests, electrically adjustable seats, and other features stand out.

Fourth Gen Skoda Superb: Powertrain Options

The latest Skoda Superb will be sold globally with different engine and gearbox options. The petrol lineup begins with a 150-hp mild-hybrid 1.5-liter engine setup, while the 204-hp and 265-hp 2.0-liter engines do not get the hybrid option. The 265-hp version sends power to all four wheels. The two-wheel-drive diesel produces 150 horsepower, while the four-wheel-drive version produces 193 horsepower.

The top-of-the-line PHEV combines the entry-level 1.5-liter petrol engine with a single electric motor to produce 204 hp at the front wheels. Skoda claims that the pure-electric propulsion is powered by a 25.7kWh pack that can be recharged at rates of up to 50kW (DC), allowing for a 10-80 percent charge in 25 minutes, and it has a claimed pure-electric range of 100 km.

As per reports, the Czech carmaker has attached all the engine options to a 7-speed DSG gearbox.
