Analysis

Maruti Suzuki India

India’s No. 1 carmaker Maruti Suzuki has reported domestic passenger vehicle sales of 1,50,812 units in September 2023, registering a negative growth of 3.39% when compared to last month (August 2023), while it registered a marginal growth compared to the same month of last year (September 2022). Small cars like the Alto and S-Presso registered a deep fall in sales, with just 10,351 units dispatched combined. Compared to last year, it is a massive drop of 65%, as in September 22, these small cars contributed 29,574 units combined.

The SUV line-up of Maruti Suzuki performed really well, with a sales increase of nearly 82% when compared to last year's sales. The line-up comprises cars like the Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Jimny, XL6, Grand Vitara, and Invicto. All these cars contributed 39% to the total sales of Maruti Suzuki.

For the period of April to September 2023, Maruti Suzuki holds 42.3% of the passenger vehicle market.

Hyundai Motor India

Hyundai has registered sales of 54,241 units in the domestic market, which is a growth of 9.13% when compared to last year. Hyundai claims that the total sales (domestic and exports) registered by Hyundai are the highest ever since the inception of the company. They managed to dispatch a total of 71,641 units in September 2023, which is the highest ever with a yearly growth of more than 13%. However, on a month-on-month basis, performance stood quite flat, with a growth of just 0.76% compared to August 2023. The newly launched Exter mini SUV performed well, with sales of 8,500 units.

Tata Motors

Tata’s sales figures are rather surprising, as it registered a downfall of about 6% when compared to September 2022. With sales of 44,809 units in September, the company registered a marginal month-on-month de-growth of 1.55%. The decline can be attributed to the transition from the old Nexon to the newly launched Nexon. Tata claims that their EV business performed really well, with a year-on-year growth of 55%. Currently, Tata Motors commands a massive 80% share in the EV space.

Mahindra and Mahindra

M&M came out to be the best performer in September 2023 among the top 5 car makers in India. Mahindra’s portfolio is full of SUVs and MUVs, and the craze for high-ground-clearance vehicles seems to be all-time high. With sales of 41,267 units in September 2023, they managed year-on-year growth of 20.44% and month-on-month growth of 10.72%. Demand for SUVs like the Scorpio Classic, Scorpio N, Bolero, Thar, XUV700, and XUV300 continues to be strong. M&M is trying to ensure the availability of semiconductors and other components to meet the strong demand for their cars in the upcoming holiday season.

Toyota

Toyota and Kia Motors have been fighting for the 5th spot for the last couple of months, and for now, until official sales figures for Kia Motors India are revealed, we assume Toyota to be in the 5th spot with a dispatch of 22,168 units in the month of September 2023, which translates into massive growth of 44.15% on a yearly basis and 5.71% growth when compared to sales in August 2023. Models sourced from Maruti Suzuki have helped a lot in increasing sales for Toyota Kirloskar Motor. The company's strong hybrid technology proved to be the best alternative for diesel car buyers.
