Tata Safari vs. Mahindra Scorpio N Comparison: Specs and Pricing

By Adarsh Dutt Upadhyay - 24-10-2023 04:04 PM

Tata Motor has recently launched the Safari facelift and given it a new lease of life to take on competitors like the Scropio N, XUV700, MG Hector, and others, but it is a well-known fact that the most sought-after competition in the segment still remains between the Safari and Scorpio N, so here we are presenting an on-paper comparison of the most talked-about SUVs under Rs. 30 lakh.

Dimensions

Both of these SUVs belong to a similar segment and offer a three-row seating arrangement, and in terms of dimensions, the SUVs are not much different either, with a very marginal difference in terms of L x B comparison, but the height of the Scorpio is considerably higher compared to the Safari due to its tall boy character. In terms of fuel tank capacity, the Scorpio is a clear winner with 7 liters of more storage.

Technical Specifications

Tata still lacks when it comes to engine options, as there is no petrol on offer. On the other hand, Mahindra offers a state-of-the art TGDi mStallion petrol engine in the Scorpio N, which produces a massive 200 HP of output. As far as diesel engines are concerned, both cars offer comparable performance on paper.

Tata Motors has given single engine tuning in all the variants of the Safari so that buyers of the lower variants don’t have to make any compromise on power, but Mahindra has tuned its diesel engine in two different settings. The lowest Z2 variant gets the lower output version with just 132 hp on tap and 300 Nm of torque. The higher variants get a more powerful iteration of the engine, which produces 175 hp and 370 Nm of torque; moreover, the automatic versions of the Scoprio get an even more torquey engine that can twist things with 400 Nm of torque.

Both cars have similar brake setups, with discs both at the front and rear.

Features

Both manufacturers have loaded their cars with a long list of features, but due to the recent update to Safari, it gets some additional features when compared to the Scorpio N. The full-length panoramic sunroof is one such feature that would definitely attract many buyers to the Safari. The addition of the ADAS suit in the Safari has also upped its appeal compared to the Scorpio N. Here are the major features that both cars are equipped with:

Pricing and warranty

The Scorpio starts at around three lakh less than the Safari, while its range maxes out at about three lakh less than the Safari. If we talk about the value proposition, the Scorpio N is unbeatable, but we are not saying that it is a cheap car by any means. On the other side, it also offers a vast range of engine and gearbox options that the Safari lacks. The Scorpio N even comes with a four-wheel drive system that adds even more versatility to the package.

However, the long waiting period on the Scorpio N can be a deal breaker for some customers, as it is around 8 to 10 months, while the newly refreshed Safari commands a waiting period of around two months as of now.

So in our opinion, if you want a car in a hurry, the Safari is the best option with best-in-class features, but you will have only the diesel option to go for. As far as after-sales and service are considered, both Tata and Mahindra struggle to provide the best experience to the customers as of now, but they are improving day by day. Tata also has a better sales and service network compared to Mahindra.
