India-bound New-Gen Volkswagen Polo

By Team ManAndMotor - 28-03-2021 12:27 PM

We have reported earlier that the new-generation Volkswagen Polo hatchback is currently under development. While there is no official word on its India launch timeline, the hatch’s new model is likely to hit our shores sometime in 2022 or 2023. It will be sixth generation Polo, which is already on sale in global market. Unlike the global model, the India-spec new Volkswagen Polo will be sub-4 meter in length and will be based on the localized MQB-A0 modular platform.

The same architecture will underpin the upcoming Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun mid-size SUVs. The MQB-A0 is claimed to be uniform yet variable platform that’s compatible to numerous innovative assistance and safety systems from higher to compact vehicle segment. It uses high-strength steels that make it significantly lightweight.

Details of the India-spec new Volkswagen Polo are scanty at this point of time. Though, it’s likely to feature an entirely new exterior design similar to the global model. The hatchback might come with several segment-first features along with a new touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control unit and more.

At present, the Polo comes with the two BS6-compliant petrol engines – 1.0L MPI (76bhp/95Nm) and 1.0L Turbo (110bhp/175Nm). While the former is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox, the turbo-petrol unit can be had with the 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

In terms of pricing, the new Volkswagen Polo will be more expensive than the existing model that costs between Rs 6.01 lakh – Rs 9.92 lakh. With improved styling, updated interior and more features, the sixth-generation model is estimated to cost from Rs 8 lakh for the base model to Rs 12 lakh for the top-end trim. It will take on the cars like Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai i20 and Tata Altroz, which have been priced from Rs 5.88 lakh, Rs 6.79 lakh and Rs 5.69 lakh respectively.
