The much-awaited twin of the Triumph Speed 400 gets specific hardware upgrades for better off-road capabilities. It comes at a premium of Rs 30,000 over the Roadster Speed 400.
The Bajaj Manufactured Mid Segment Triumph Twins were unveiled in June this year, and while the price of the Speed 400 was announced immediately, the price of its off-roader version was only recently announced. It is priced at Rs. 2,62,996 (ex-showroom). It comes at a premium of Rs. 30,000 over the Speed 400 and carries some specific off-roading characteristics.
What's new?
Compared to the Speed 400, the most prominent change in the Scrambler 400X is its taller suspension unit, which performs better in rough terrain. It has 20 mm more wheel travel compared to the Speed 400. It also gets 19-inch front wheels, while the rear wheels are the same as the Speed 400, which are 17 inches. However, the rim width is decreased by half an inch both at the front and rear. Scrambler also gets a set of thinner tyres both at the front and rear. The front tyre is 100/90-19, while the rear is 140/80-17. The front brake disc is also larger in the Scrambler, with a diameter of 320 mm compared to 300 mm in the Speed 400.
As far as dimensions are considered, the scrambler is slightly larger in many aspects. It has a handlebar width of 901 mm (814 mm for the Speed 400), a seat height of 835 mm (790 mm for the Speed 400), and a wheelbase of 1418 mm (1377 mm for the Speed 400). The weight of the scrambler is also on the higher side, with 185 kg of wet weight compared to 176 kg for the Speed 400. The Scrambler gets switchable ABS and traction control as well.
In terms of aesthetics and ergonomics, the Scrambler 400X gets upgraded flat foot pegs with removable rubber. It also features engine sump protection, headlight grill protection, a radiator guard, a handlebar brace, and knuckle guards.
In terms of features, it gets an all-LED lighting system, a semi-digital instrument cluster, a USB-C charging socket, a factory-fitted immobiliser key, and more. Furthermore, you can personalise your Scrambler 400X with the selection of 25 genuine accessories offered by the brand. Three colour options are available with the Scrambler: Matte Khaki green, Phantom Black, and Carnival Red.
What about the engine?
It is already known that both Bajaj-manufactured Triumphs will share the same 398 cc single-cylinder engine. It produces 40 hp at 8,000 rpm and puts out a healthy torque of 37.5 Nm at 6500 rpm. The engine is coupled with a 6-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch.
Scrambler 400X Rivals
The Scrambler 400X has no major rivals as of now. The cheaper-priced Yezdi Scrambler (Rs. 2.10 lakh–2.12 lakh) may offer some competition to the Triumph. Bajaj’s own manufactured KTM 390Adventure X is also going to compete with the Scrambler 400X.
